In La Paz, which sits in an Andean valley, many indigenous ethnicities hold the coca leaf dear, as a crop that fuels their economy and is also chewed as sustenance for energy. (AP)

In the Andean mountains it is traditionally chewed to reduce the symptoms of lack of oxygen produced by altitude sickness. (AP)
