A much-debated drug for Lou Gehrig’s disease won U.S. approval Thursday, a long-sought victory for patients that is likely to renew questions about the scientific rigor behind government reviews of experimental medicines.

A 12-year-old girl who investigators said plotted with a friend to kill their families and run away together has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials say.

Cheryl Yewdall spent most of her life at a Philly care home for people with developmental disabilities. It was there that she was found face down on the floor, in a pool of urine, suffocating on a large wad of paper that had been stuffed down her throat.

A since-deceased California priest drugged and raped a teenage boy and gave him HIV, according to a lawsuit. That experience is the foundation of a recent suit brought against the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Diocese of San Jose.
