Appointed to the nation’s highest court in 1993 by former President Bill Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the oldest sitting member on the court. She died Friday of metastatic pancreatic cancer at age 87.

The 10-hour procedure was challenging because the virus had left her lungs full of holes and almost fused to the chest wall, said Dr. Ankit Bharat, who performed the operation.
