Every day he was away, fighting the advancing Russian forces, Viktor Dudar found time to message or call his wife Oksana. "I'm alive," he wrote. "Everything is okay." Then the messages stopped. My latest story from #Ukraine . Photos by @KPfaffenbach

Nine days later: Different pianist, same long lines of mainly women and children, fleeing Ukraine.

A woman with her hands blown off. A man whose hair turned grey from anxiety. People with disabilities stuck in bombed-out homes with walls vibrating from fresh attacks. @hrw  reports from Mariupol - "a freezing hellscape riddled with dead bodies." #Ukraine

Sheer brilliance from @jonathanliew . His first paragraph channels Joyce to capture the disorienting experience of playing against Liverpool.

Outside Lviv station, which is thronging with exhausted refugees fleeing war in eastern Ukraine, an accomplished pianist is playing “What a Wonderful World.” It’s hauntingly beautiful.

A photo on my office wall, by David Høgsholt, shows Myanmar troops at Shwedagon pagoda in 2007 during another crackdown on unarmed protesters. It’s a reminder that the military always lurks in this beautiful country, ready and willing to inflict terrible violence on its people.
