Through shrewd investing and strategic deal-making, Sumner Redstone became one of the world's most powerful and unpredictable corporate leaders. The media titan, who built the company Viacom into a global empire, died Tuesday. He was 97.

Under his watch, Viacom became one of the nation's media titans, home to pay TV channels MTV and Comedy Central and movie studio Paramount Pictures.
