Emmett Till was lynched 65 years ago today. The 14-year-old was kidnapped and murdered by two white men in Mississippi. His killers were acquitted by an all-white jury and never brought to justice. A bill to make lynching a federal hate crime is still stalled in the Senate.

Emmett Till should have turned 79 today. But he was just 14 years old when he was brutally murdered. Racism is still alive and well today yet just last month one Republican Senator blocked our bill to make lynching a federal crime. We still have a long way to go as a nation.

Emmett Till was murdered at 14. He would’ve been 78 years old today. Racists love to shoot the sign marking where his body was found. That pockmarked plaque is the inverse of a gravestone, showing just how alive racism remains in this ugly country of ours.
The new sign marking the spot where Emmett Till’s body is believed to have been found is made of steel, weighs 500 pounds and, the manufacturer says, it’s bulletproof. It’s the 4th sign at the memorial after others were stolen and hit with bullets.
JUST IN: The House of Representatives has approved legislation making lynching a federal hate crime for the first time in U.S. history. The Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act was named for the 14-year-old teenager who was lynched in Mississippi in the 1950s.
Today would have been Emmett Till’s 78th birthday. Yet his life was cut short when he was just 14. Lynching is still not considered a federal hate crime to this day. I have a bill to make it one. It's time we confronted this dark part of our nation's history and right this wrong.
