Generations of children from poor families, many of them Black and Latino, found fun and respite at summer camps run by the YMCA of Greater New York. Now the pandemic has forced the camps to shut for good. “I’m so sad and angry,” one former camper said.

The #AmericanRescuePlan  includes a temporary CTC expansion that would help the lowest income families afford monthly expenses like rent, diapers, and food. The policy would reduce child poverty among Black and Latino children and promote racial equity.

Equity is also an issue. Rates of transmission and deaths are higher in Black, Latino and economically disadvantaged communities, often the same areas where schools have smaller budgets, fewer resources, larger classes and problems like old buildings.

New: Thousands of kids were freed from juvenile detention during the pandemic. They were more likely to be White, data shows. Many youth facilities are increasingly holding almost entirely Black and Latino teens.

The Y.M.C.A. of Greater New York is selling three summer camps that have been a bucolic retreat for generations of children, many of them Black and Latino and from families that could not otherwise afford to provide them a summer in the country.

Google has often highlighted its commitment to a diverse, inclusive workforce. But the company's 2020 report revealed that Google saw a less than 1% increase of Black hires from 2019 to 2020. The percentage of Latino employees rose by just .2% that year. (7/8)

Almost 8,000 ballots in Georgia and Florida have been flagged for errors or rejection, reports @NBCNews  — most of them cast by Black, Asian and Latino voters. So far, at least 1,565 mail-in ballots in Georgia have been rejected. About 50% of them are from Black voters.

US Surgeon General Jerome Adams says black, Latino & other people of color should "avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs." "We need you to step up," he says. Some will find this language offensive after Adams stressed that behavior was not the issue for why more black ppl are dying.
