A Belarusian taxi driver is being hailed as a hero for helping a man escape from the riot police.

Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the Belarusian opposition leader who was forced to flee to Lithuania, went to Brussels Monday morning, before the foreign ministers’ meeting, to plead for sanctions and “bravery.” She went away with neither.

European diplomats have gathered inside the home of Svetlana Alexievich, the Belarusian Nobel laureate, to protect her from Lukashenko’s security forces and prevent her from being detained. Alexievich is a member of Tikhanovskaya’s coordination council and supports the protests.
