Sandra Mason became Barbados' first president, replacing Queen Elizabeth as head of state. It comes almost 400 years after the British colonized the island and enslaved over 380,000 people on its plantations. The queen is still head of state in 15 countries, mostly ex-colonies.

Barbados became a republic on Tuesday, cutting ties with Queen Elizabeth II and ending nearly 400 years of British rule. The island swore in its first president, Sandra Mason, at a ceremony attended by Prince Charles and Rihanna.
