Trump's comments on Tiananmen Square, just 9 months after the killings: "When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength."

Republicans love to praise the Hong Kong protests while defending police violence back home. You can't have it both ways.

last night i chatted with a friend in taipei trying to figure out why new yorkers aren't more furious that our leaders' incompetence have already allowed nearly 15,000 city residents to die. if this happened in taipei, hong kong, etc. the government would already be DONE.

every new yorker should be furious. cuomo and de blasio blithely spread misinformation. dicked around weeks before doing anything. now 20,000 people and counting in nyc alone are dead. by contrast: the covid death toll in san francisco is 36.

so all the american right-wingers who cheered on hong kongers' uprising against police brutality, called us heroes fighting for basic freedoms and passed bills to 'defend' our human rights are going to do the same for black americans now, right?

i never again want to hear a western leftist explain the ccp is our great anti-imperialist hope, or that calling the ccp authoritarian is somehow sinophobic. the party is consistent about siding with state power over people's struggles whether in china, hong kong, or the US
