The first coronavirus deaths recorded in Acadiana: 1 in Acadia Parish (where I'm from) 3 in St. Martin Parish (aged 89, 70, and "41 and otherwise in good health")

Louisiana has the third-highest smoking rate (behind only WV and KY) and all sorts of respiratory problems from chemical plants and other industry. Lots of people there with already constrained lung function, which has to be driving some of this.

Is this a movie review or a news story about the life of every American parent rn

This is the state-of-the-news-industry piece you've been waiting for this week: @kdoctor  on the immense damage being done to the local news business by the coronavirus.

On the positive side: Audiences are consuming and *valuing* local news at a scale unseen in years. That's translated into a big acceleration in digital subscriptions. As one news exec put it: "This may be our last chance to prove how valuable we are."

On the negative side: As a percentage, newspapers' ad revenues have dropped about as much during this brief stretch of coronavirus as they did *during the two worst years of the financial crisis*. They're down 30-50%. (2008: Down 17%. 2009: Down 27%)

"All of this — this March massacre of news revenue — is prologue, of course. We just don’t yet know what it’s prologue *to*. The 2020 calendar has never looked longer."

"'Nobody should think they don't have COVID-19 in any parish,' @LouisianaGov  said as the state reported 36 new coronavirus deaths Friday. 'I can assure you (coronavirus) is in every community and parish in Louisiana.'"

I have finally figured out what Twitter's feed design was born for: dramatic reveals of insane bird feet

I did it, I found the worst gif on the internet

How in the world do you (a) create a formula to determine how much “adversity” a 17-year-old has faced, (b) using only school-level and neighborhood-level data, not personal data, and then (c) hide the formula’s results from the kid?

Somehow, “President Asks FBI Director to Jail Reporters” is only the third-biggest Trump-related story of the last 24 hours

Anybody remember two months ago, where an established and respected journalist accused the president of the United States of raping her?

Of the Boston public high school valedictorians the tracked down, more became homeless than became doctors (the career 1/4 of them had said they aspired to). Today, only 40% earn more than $50K a year, and 1 in 4 don't have a college degree.

Bret Stephens cites a Henry Harpending paper in his "Jewish genius" column Here's an piece from *just last @nytopinionyear * noting Henry Harpending was a white supremacist nut about this stuff

It is frankly astonishing that the @nytimes  is treating a credible accusation of rape against the president by a well-known journalist as *a book publishing story*

The @nytimes  is a glorious and critical institution. But how ABSOLUTELY INSANE is it that its vision of the struggling middle class is someone making $200-400K in a Pennsylvania small town?
