thanks to @BBCr4today  for having me on to talk about giraffes in zoos. zoos have good intentions, but a giraffe enclosure is much less than 1% of a giraffe’s natural range...

... plus there’s the difference in climate, a lack of trees, and the lack of control over their own lives and social interactions (in the wild, giraffes live in flexible groups)

not so long ago, zoo managers thought any animals - even *whales* - could be kept in zoos. but the tide has turned. London Zoo no longer has elephants and polar bears. David Attenborough himself says some animals shouldn’t be in zoos:

modern zoos are a product of the nineteenth century and its imperial mindset. if we started again now, we would do things very differently - focusing a lot more on small animals that breed well in captivity and which might be reintroduced to the wild.

anyway, more on this in my book HOW TO LOVE ANIMALS IN A HUMAN-SHAPED WORLD. and I want to emphasise that zoos are full of good people, who are often constrained by tradition and by a perception of what the public expects.

Another mind-boggling story about Robert Jenrick. He had a planning application rejected twice by the council, then he got elected as a Conservative MP, resubmitted it in his wife’s name, and - hey presto - Tory councillors intervened to approve it.

JD Sports executive chairman tells Radio 4 that Brexit is costing the company “double-digit millions” and will probably lead it to move 1,000 distribution centre jobs to the EU Is it worse than you expected? “Yes, considerably.”

If Dominic Cummings did edit an old blog so that it appeared to warn about coronavirus, it matters for three reasons: 1. It would mean he made a false statement in the press conference 2. That would question the credibility of his whole Durham story ...
