Me on pregnancy social media: "I was awash in earth-toned nurseries and ethereal, long-haired pregnant women in Dôen dresses. Everyone seemed like they were 26 and gorgeous, and I was 41 and puking my brains out."

And yet I do think there's been a significant shift in women's media overall: "If you opened up an issue of Jane or Lucky no one looked like they were over 25. It was like the second you turned 35 you did not matter at all to women’s media, and I think that has really changed."

I spoke with Mary Catherine Starr, aka momlife_comics, about why people freaked out about her comic about peaches:

Her comics highlight issues of mental load and emotional labor in heterosexual relationships with kids that, I suspect, some people want to believe no longer exist — which is why her comic engendered such a reaction.

As Starr put it to me: “When you have kids, for the majority of us, not all of us, the cultural standards and the expectations of parents are so strong that a lot of us have slipped back into the roles we never thought we'd be in.”

"It is wildly expensive for women to achieve any semblance of a work-life balance. It takes a village, and that village costs a shit ton."
