Why are South Africans (and you can say the same for some others on the continent) not in the streets against police brutality like Americans are? One reason: South Africans are captured by punitive logics. Break that.

The respected and well-known Nigerien journalist Samira Sabou, arrested on 10 June after reporting on corruption by a family friend of Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou. Samira is now in pre-trial detention in the civil prison in Niamey.

The great Walter Rodney was murdered on this day, 13 June 1980, in Georgetown, Guyana, by the country's rightwing government. (A violent, pro-US regime that hid behind pro-black, pan-African rhetoric). But they couldn't kill his ideas.
