This back-to-school season will look a little different for students at the University of British Columbia.

Two petitions circulating online are pleading with the University of British Columbia to protect the school's tens of thousands of students, faculty and staff from the fast-spreading COVID-19 by temporarily suspending regular classes.

There are almost 140 recovery programs offered at U.S. post-secondary institutions, but the University of British Columbia is the only other Canadian school that carries such a program.

The University of British Columbia says 32 of its students on exchange in Hong Kong have either left the city or confirmed they are safe after the school urged them to leave the area for their own well-being.
