The first all-black flying unit started 75 years ago. Now, pilots are honoring the Tuskegee Airmen by flying Mustangs similar to the aircrafts they used in combat during #Thunderon11 .

"From redlining and gerrymandering to the Tuskegee experiment and Cointelpro, the proven conspiracies against Black Americans are so devious, so deep and so absurd that they blast open pathways for true-sounding non-truths to enter, too."

About a decade ago, I interviewed Robert Morales, who invented that character for Marvel in 2001. The result was "Truth: Red, White, And Black" which recast the story of Captain America's origins as part of a Tuskegee Syphillis Study-like plot.

For subscribers: Historical events of mistreatment and exploitation, including but not limited to the Tuskegee study, have led to a greater hesitancy among Black Americans of getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

Fewer Black people have received Covid-19 vaccines than White people. Some people have attributed these lower rates to distrust stemming from the Tuskegee Syphilis Study of the 1930s to 1970s — but there are modern factors at play.

Tuskegee isn't the only reason why some Black people are hesitant to get the coronavirus vaccine

It's not Tuskegee. Current medical racism fuels Black Americans' vaccine hesitancy

Half of the eligible staff members at Harlem Hospital have received a Covid vaccine, reflecting mistrust in the Black community partly rooted in past medical injustices, including the Tuskegee experiment, when Black men were denied treatment for syphilis.

The Tuskegee syphilis study is often cited as a reason why Black Americans might hesitate on the COVID-19 vaccine. But many say it's current racism in health care and Tuskegee is used as an excuse.

If you want to understand elevated distrust of the medical establishment, don’t invoke Tuskegee. Look at what Black women *today* say about their routine encounters with the medical establishment.

Beyond handshakes and ripped speeches, don’t miss that Trump overtly appealed for the Black vote last night. He talked about Tuskegee, civil rights, MLK, school choice, and HBCUs. Trump in 2016 won twice as much of the black vote that McCain did. He wants double digits in 2020.

So @realDonaldTrump  wants to appeal to Black voters and gives the Presidential Medal of Freedom to racist Rush Limbaugh. During Black History Month. So honoring a Tuskegee Airman is supposed to make me overlook that BS? Hell to the naw!

I say this with respect, as the son and grandson of men who served in wartime. I loved seeing a centenarian Tuskegee Airman recognized. But while I grasp that Trump is the commander-in-chief, something in my heart hurt seeing that distinguished black man saluting this @POTUS .

One of last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, Lt. Col. Robert Friend, has died. He was 99. Not only did Friend fly 142 missions in the iconic black unit in the Army Air Corps, he went on to serve in the Korean and Vietnam wars. “He was our guiding light.”

The Tuskegee Airmen risked their lives for this country at a time when black men and women faced systematic racism and discrimination. We owe them all a debt of gratitude this #BlackHistoryMonth
