Plans for open pit mining there date to 1974 when Anamax first contemplated the investment in the Santa Rita Mountains southeast of Tucson. Now, Hudbay plans to proceed with an open pit if it wins a court appeal.

The flash flood warning includes southeast Pinal County, the Catalina and Rincon mountains, Marana, Vail, Mount Lemmon, Summerhaven, Tucson, Mammoth, Oracle and Green Valley.

People are being allowed to return to areas evacuated in response to the Bighorn Fire in the mountains north of Tucson.

The lightning-caused wildfire in the mountains north of Tucson has been burning since June 5. It has scorched 118,897 acres.
