ON THIS DAY: In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln died, nine hours after being shot the night before by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.

President Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. on #ThisDayInHistory  in 1865. The assassin, John Wilkes Booth, shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis! The South is avenged,” as he jumped onto the stage and fled on horseback. Lincoln died the next day.

The roughly 2-inch long lock of hair was removed during Lincoln’s postmortem examination after he was fatally shot at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., by John Wilkes Booth.
