A fundamental, defining feature of a democratic republic is the right of the people to elect their own leaders. The effort by Sens. Hawley, Cruz, and others to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in swing states like Pennsylvania directly undermines this right.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: "I have demanded the resignations of Sens. Ted Cruz, Josh Hawley, Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, along with many others."

Because of massive potential conflict of interest, Sens Cruz, Hawley and Johnson (at least) need to be off all relevant committees reviewing this matter until the investigation of their role is complete.

The Senate will need to conduct security review of what happened and what went wrong, likely through Rules, Homeland and Judiciary. The Senate Ethics Committee also must consider the expulsion, or censure and punishment, of Sens. Cruz, Hawley, and perhaps others.

Sen. Patty Murray, the No. 3 Democrat, joins calls for Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz to resign.
