Two Senate and House Dems launch investigation into Trump’s firing of State Department independent watchdog Steve Linick and ask White House, State and State IG’s office to “preserve all records related to the firing and turn information over to the committees” by May 22.

Meanwhile: -The 5-member congressional oversight commission has just 1 member and no chair. -Trump's pandemic inspector general is controversial and awaiting Senate confirmation -Trump sidelined the chair of the council of IGs meant to monitor the $2T.

YET, GOVERNMENT OVERSIGHT is shrinking. -- POTUS has fired 2 IGs and, if you believe reports, is planning on firing more. … THE ADMINISTRATION has routinely flouted subpoenas for appearances and documents. … SENATE REPUBLICANS have shrunk from checking the president.

This is one of several oversight mechanisms built into the new law. They include: -A committee of IGs (now led by Fine) -A new special IG (to be nominated by Trump) -Congressional review panel (to be appointed by House/Senate leaders)
