"Black people were not free on Independence Day," Nikole Hannah-Jones says. "When the colonists decided that they needed to break off from Britain in order to become free themselves, they held one fifth of the population in bondage."

We need more conversation, and less cancelation. Attack ideas, not people. It’s the point of @Yascha_Mounk’s latest great piece, and it’s irrelevant what Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote in college. My @FourthWatch  newsletter:

Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones on reparations: “There is nothing that Black Americans can unilaterally do that will close a wealth gap that was created by 350 years of policy.”

My line in the sand: I don’t care what Nikole Hannah-Jones wrote when she was 20 in college. It’s irrelevant. It has nothing to do with her work now. It shouldn’t lead to Cancelation. It’s wrong from the left, so it’s wrong from the right. You can’t fight fire with fire.

On MSNBC rantfest Morning Joe, NY Times 1619 Project's Nikole Hannah-Jones calls for reparations, then says it's not enough!
