Stocks opened mixed Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average losing ground and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite jumping to the upside after a much-weaker-than-expected April jobs report.

Futures on the Nasdaq Composite surged higher as investors respond to news of weaker-than-expected employment growth in April.

US stocks ended higher on Thursday, with the Dow notching a new all-time high for the second straight session. The index closed up 0.9%, or 316 points. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite closed 0.8% and 0.4% higher, respectively.

Stocks were off to a mixed start Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average building on the previous session's record close and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite remaining under pressure.

US stocks ended mixed on Wednesday, with the Nasdaq Composite dragged 0.3% lower, predominately driven by losses in real estate, utilities and health care stocks. The Dow finished up 0.3%, or 97 points, while the S&P 500 closed 0.1% higher.
