Grace periods have not prevented the massive disruption to trade we have experienced as a result of the Protocol. They simply prolong uncertainty. We need a reset of the agreement and a move towards the mutual enforcement model.
The ERG’s new paper rightly states that the Northern Ireland Protocol breaches the fundamental principle of the Belfast Agreement: no change in sovereignty without consent of the majority of people. Mutual Enforcement will, crucially, respect UK sovereignty and EU Single Market.

There are credible alternatives to the Protocol. Mutual enforcement would ensure that the 95% of goods travelling from GB to NI, which do not move into the EU, could avoid regulations. The proposal protects the UK internal market and the EU single market with legal guarantees.
