Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer met with Mnuchin and WH Chief of Staff Mark Meadows multiple times to try to hash out a deal.

Playbook PM BEHIND THE SCENES … Treasury Secretary STEVEN MNUCHIN and White House chief of staff MARK MEADOWS held one of their regular conference calls with Senate Republicans this morning. Here are the highlights:

MEADOWS told the senators that his Thursday call with Speaker NANCY PELOSI was a waste of time, and MNUCHIN said he doesn’t believe PELOSI is in dealmaking mode.

Pelosi on talking w/Meadows today: This is a conversation only to respect the fact that the President's representative – not even the lead negotiator, that would be Mnuchin, we consider, whatever his name is – what's his name? Meadows there is staffing Mr. Mnuchin.

Speaker Pelosi on Mark Meadows ahead of their call on COVID relief: "This is a conversation only to respect the fact that the president's representative, not even the lead negotiator, what's his name—Meadows— there is staffing Mr. Mnuchin."

Pelosi on her call w/ Meadows: “This conversation made clear that the White House continues to disregard the needs of the American people as the coronavirus crisis devastates lives and livelihoods.” Before the call she called him a Mnuchin staffer whose name she couldn’t recall.

On a private call with GOP senators today, Mnuchin and Meadows said they believed that the Democrats’ demands for nearly $1 trillion for state and local government is the biggest sticking point over a deal, per multiple sources.

Pelosi said that she believes the money for the new FBI building was included in the GOP plan to help with business for the Trump hotel. Schumer said Meadows and Mnuchin didn’t explain why the money was in there but they “acknowledged it (was included) when we asked.”

Schumer says he pushed the WH last night to include $3.6 billion for the states to hold elections, including vote by mail, and says Meadows and Mnuchin said no. “Why are they resisting?” Schumer said

THE POSTMASTER GENERAL will meet tomorrow with Schumer, pelosi, meadows and mnuchin.

The president is back at his Virginia golf course today. Sec. Mnuchin told reporters the president is fully available to negotiators working toward a covid relief deal. Mnuchin said he and CoS Meadows spoke to the president 8 or 9 times this weekend about the talks.

Pelosi and Schumer emerge from meeting with Mnuchin and Meadows and accuse McConnell of trying to scuttle an agreement, pointing to his demand to ensure liability protections are unchanged. Schumer says McConnell “sounds like a person who has no interest in getting an agreement.”

@tedbarrettcnn pressed Meadows and Mnuchin several times why the money for the FBI building was included - and they wouldn’t answer

After meeting with Meadows and Mnuchin, Schumer says they are “somewhat frustrated” and says GOP “dithered” before putting out their plan. He says they were told GOP didn’t have money proposed for food stamps but had money for a new FBI building: “What the heck is going on?”
