JUST IN: The Mississippi Senate just approved a bill that will give a pay raise to teachers and teacher assistants. The bill now moves to the House.

The Mississippi Senate on Thursday unanimously passed a $1,000 a year teacher pay raise that will bring starting teachers’ salary to $37,000 a year.

Mississippi legislators are again mulling pay increases for the state's teachers. SB 2001, which unanimously passed the Senate Education Committee on Wednesday, would give certified teachers with three or more years of experience a $1,000 pay increase.

Weird that this article from NBC News neglects to name the party responsible for passage of this measure. GOP dominates the Mississippi House 74-45 and the Senate 36-16, and the governor is a Republican. Yet the GOP never appears in this article. Odd.

Very sad to hear the news on the passing of my friend, Senator Thad Cochran. He was a real Senator with incredible values - even flew back to Senate from Mississippi for important Healthcare Vote when he was desperately ill. Thad never let our Country (or me) down!
