A large southward dip in the jet stream across the West and a pronounced bulge northward in the East is creating quite the contrast in weather conditions nationwide. Record-challenging warmth is expected across the Midwest and Northeast once again today:
Case numbers are rising rapidly as the Midwest struggles to control major virus outbreaks. North Dakota has the most cases per capita, and states across the rural West have seen cases soar to new records.
Different sections of the U.S. have experienced spikes in cases at different times during the pandemic — early spring in the Northeast, midsummer in the South and West. Lately, the Midwest has seen soaring numbers of daily cases.
