At the Matamoros refugee camp in Mexico, hundreds of asylum seekers are waiting for court dates in the U.S. because of the "Remain in Mexico" program. Cuban doctors, who are also seeking asylum, have become their caregivers.

Recently, dozens of parents at the Matamoros camp have watched as their children, sleeping outside in the cold, have become sick or despondent. Many decided to get them help the only way they knew how — sending them across the border alone.

Every day the United States sends dozens of asylum seekers to wait in Matamoros. And every day parents decide the only way to spare their children is to send them alone across the border, knowing they might never see them again.

Unlike most refugee camps, Matamoros has no United Nations presence. It receives no US funding. People sleep in camping tents on the sidewalk and bathe in the Rio Grande. Some will have to wait there for over a year.
