“The die is cast. Armin Laschet will be the chancellor candidate,” Markus Söder, the premier of Bavaria, told a news conference. Söder backed out of the nomination race after a Christian Democrats vote showed significantly stronger support for Laschet.

The race is not over just yet. Markus Söder’s secret weapon is his charisma, which has made him a political star well beyond Bavaria. He enjoys more popular support than Armin Laschet overall.
