'If the Tories fail to hold their hitherto safe seat of North Shropshire in the by-election next week then many will think it is not the party that is in freefall, but its leader.' ✍️ Patrick O'Flynn

Still thinking about why Americans are so downbeat about the economy, inspired in part by this Simon Wren-Lewis piece about Britain — where voters say that the Tories are better for the economy, but Labour better for living standards (!) 1/

Britain's state pension is one of the lowest in Europe, with more than 2 million pensioners living in poverty. To combat pensioner poverty, tonight I voted to keep pension rises linked to earnings. But the Tories voted this down, breaking a manifesto promise. Disgraceful.

Government’s unfair & underhand U-turn on catastrophic care costs passed 272 to 246 Deeply depressing to watch vast majority of Tories dutifully troop through the Aye lobby to defend the indefensible

Imagine being convicted of an offence but instead of serving a sentence, your mates *arrange* a review of the justice system to let you off scot-free That's what Tories are trying to do. It's a shameful undermining of an independent system of scrutiny to save one of their own

The wealth of UK billionaires is up by £106,500,000,000 in the pandemic. But instead of making them pay more, the Tories are raising National Insurance, hitting low paid & young workers the hardest. Social care should be funded with a wealth tax, not a tax on the working class.

The new Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, earns £150k as an advisor to US bank JP Morgan. JP Morgan say they "see the opportunities that lie ahead" for private healthcare. The ultimate "opportunity" for private healthcare is NHS privatisation. The NHS isn't safe with the Tories.

The absolute bantz of the Tories using the tag line #BritainDeservesBetter  after being in Government for 9 years. You're not wrong lads.

Boris Johnson tells us he wants no child to be more than 15 minutes away from a football pitch. The Tories' cuts have closed over 700 council football pitches since 2010.

Serco's CEO is the brother of a former Tory MP. His partner is a Tory Party donor. And Serco's former top spin doctor is the Tory Minister for Health. In Parliament, I just voted for Test and Trace funding to go to local public health teams, not Serco. The Tories voted it down.

I try not to tweet political opinions, but as it’s my birthday allow me just one. The Tories do want to sell off the NHS. Not in one go, just bit by bit until it’s unrecognisable. You’ll turn up one day and there will be a priority waiting room. They’ve always been open about it.

I see some Tories are calling for a sentence of ten years in jail if you scrawl paint on a monument (that can be washed off) Average sentence for rape is 8 years. Good to see they’re getting their priorities right.
