Gen. Lloyd Austin, who would be the first black Secretary of Defense, spoke of Henry O. Flipper who became the first African-American cadet to graduate from West Point. Both Austin and Flipper are from Thomasville, Georgia. Flipper was born into slavery on March 21, 1856.
