As some protesters picked up hunting rifles and slingshots, poets like Khet Thi joined a fight against Myanmar's sudden coup staged by a population unwilling to surrender hard-won democratic freedoms
Before he was killed, Khet Thi’s poems railed eloquently against Myanmar’s sudden coup, joining a deluge of protest verse celebrating democracy demonstrators and defying the military’s brutal war on words.
Myanmar poet Khet Thi "said he did not want to be a martyr." "His death is a loss for humanity." He had written of the junta, "They shoot in the head, but they don’t know the revolution is in the heart.”
These three poets -- K Za Win, Kyi Lin Aye, and Khet Thi -- have all died at the hands of the Myanmar junta's security forces. They are part of "Myanmar’s long history of...poets [who] have fought injustice with the power of art."
Myanmar security forces said detained poet Khet Thi died of "cardiac arrest." But his body showed "his face and hands were disfigured, his legs were etched with wounds from being beaten and burned, and a scar stretched down the middle of his abdomen."
"Myanmar poet Khet Thi, whose works declare resistance to the military junta, died in detention overnight" after interrogation. "They shoot in the head, but they don't know the revolution is in the heart," he wrote. Photo @IrrawaddyNews
