Hunters from Pond Inlet, Nvt. — known as Mittimatalik in Inuktitut — have said they’re seeing fewer narwhal in areas, making it harder to feed their families, and that the whales’ behaviour is changing. And that’s because of noise from ships.

Thrilled to be co-hosting the Arctic Winter Games opening ceremony Sunday evening alongside Teresa Qiatsuq of CBC Nunavut. Teresa will be commentating in Inuktitut.  Watch on @CBCNorth  starting at 6:50 MT Sunday.

“Your land is indeed your strength,” Queen Elizabeth II declared in 2002 in a speech to the Nunavut legislature that was punctuated by what was later described as “three words of simply but clearly formed Inuktitut: ‘Nakurmiit ammalu quviasugitsi.’ ”

According to the 2021 census, Inuktitut and Cree are Indigenous languages spoken most at home.

Today we also launched the Nanilavut Initiative. In Inuktitut, Nanilavut means “let’s find them,” and that’s what this project is about – finding & honouring the Inuit who went missing, and bringing healing & closure to those left behind. Read more:
