Chinese and Hong Kong officials vowed the new national security law only would target a small minority. Instead, authorities are rounding up Hong Kongers at all levels of the civil society and education sectors, censoring textbooks and raiding newsrooms.

In Opinion "Tomorrow, who knows who will be China’s next targets here. But I do know that many Hong Kongers will respond then, too, by demonstrating our solidarity, creatively," writes Joshua Wong, a democracy activist in Hong Kong.

Sad to see Agnes Chow, who I interviewed many times, arrested under national security law (& now out on bail). Agnes explained to me in @GenerationHk  that Hong Kongers aren't just struggling for political autonomy but to secure “autonomy in our own lives”

One of the most insulting things Trump said about Hong Kong yesterday was that that the US made Hong Kong viable and prosperous by spending "a fortune" on it, presumably to our detriment. That's a real slap in the face to all the Hong Kongers who built their city into what it is.

I’m proud of the Senate’s latest action to support Hong Kong. And I’m proud to have stood alongside Hong Kongers for decades in their fight for true self-determination.

More arrests taking place in #HongKong  under National Security Law. Jimmy Lai and his son were charged with “colluding w/ foreign powers.” As more arrests are expected, the free world must respond quickly as well as provide safe harbor to at-risk Hong Kongers.

The brutal purpose of Beijing’s so-called “national security” law is to frighten, intimidate & suppress the speech of Hong Kongers. All freedom-loving people must come together to condemn this law, which signals the death of the “one country, two systems” principle.

LR @RepMcCaul : "I commend my Senate colleagues for taking action to advance the #HongKongHumanRightsandDemocracyAct . Americans stand united in our strong support for Hong Kongers as they fight for freedom."

@SecPompeo : Yesterday the CCP implemented its draconian national security law on Hong Kong, in violation of the commitments it made to the Hong Kong people and the U.K., in a U.N.-registered treaty – and in contravention of Hong Kongers’ human rights and fundamental freedoms.

I call upon the administration to prioritize the admission of persecuted Hong Kongers to the United States through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. In coordination with our allies, we can help save these brave Hong Kongers from a horrific fate under authoritarian rule.

The Chinese Communist Party is moving fast to end what is left of Hong Kong’s autonomy, stripping away essential freedoms from Hong Kongers. This is unacceptable and will require a reevaluation of U.S. policy if it is not immediately reversed.

“Today, the United States Senate sent a clear message to Hong Kongers fighting for their long-cherished freedoms: we hear you, we continue to stand with you, and we will not stand idly by as Beijing undermines your autonomy." — Sen. Marco Rubio PASSED ✅

Today the Senate stood with Hong Kongers against CCP tyranny. Beijing has been warned that the United States will consider stripping Hong Kong’s special status and take additional measures if it continues to encroach on the city’s basic freedoms.

Senator Marco Rubio stands with the brave Hong Kongers advocating for Hong Kong to maintain its long-cherished and promised autonomy and freedoms against Beijing's interference. The full Senate will soon be passing Sen. Rubio's #HongKongHumanRightsAndDemocracyAct
