Haitians are kidnapped every day’: missionary abductions shed light on growing crisis

Recently used to expel more than 7,000 Haitians in a matter of just two weeks, the Biden administration has repeatedly renewed Title 42 and said that it is not an immigration enforcement measure.

Haitians mounted a nationwide strike to protest a growing wave of kidnappings.

Since the abduction, thousands of workers across Haiti have gone on strike, demanding basic security from their government. The 400 Mawozo gang and others have terrorized the country for years, with everyday Haitians bearing the brunt of the crisis.

In the '80s and '90s, the U.S. pressured Haiti to reduce tariffs on imported rice from 50 percent to 3 percent, in order to expand the market for subsidized Arkansas rice. Haiti's self-sufficient agricultural economy, which employed a majority of Haitians, was destroyed.
