Speaking to Andrew Brown Jr.'s sons at his funeral in North Carolina on Monday, Eric Garner’s grandmother offered her love and friendship. George Floyd’s sister said she shared their pain. Daunte Wright’s sister said she was outraged.

The killing of Daunte Wright by a Brooklyn Center police officer has been “devastating” for both the community and the police, the city’s police union says in its first public statement on the incident.

Andrew Brown Jr., the 42-year-old Black man who was killed in a confrontation with police in North Carolina, was laid to rest on Monday. His family was joined at the service by relatives of George Floyd, Eric Garner and Daunte Wright.

Prayers are not enough. Daunte Wright should still be with us. While an investigation is underway, our nation needs justice and healing, and Daunte’s family needs to know why their child is dead—they deserve answers.

George Floyd should not have died under an officer’s knee — he should still be alive today. So should Daunte Wright, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor, and countless other Black people killed by police.

Daunte Wright's mom: "The last few days, everybody has asked me what we want ... Everybody keeps saying justice ... There's never going to be justice for us. Justice would bring our son home ... So justice isn't even a word to me. I do want accountability. 100% accountability."

After weeks of watching George Floyd die over and over again from multiple angles, the nation now watches Daunte Wright, 20, be shot after being stopped for an expired license tag. Just devastating.

The mother of Daunte Wright says the 20-year-old called her when he was pulled over by Brooklyn Center police about 1:40 p.m. He told her police pulled him over for air fresheners hanging in the mirror, she told reporters.

“We’re not dealing with bad apples, we’re dealing with a rotten tree.” Trevor addresses Daunte Wright, Caron Nazario, and the system that protects bad cops.

I cannot fathom passionate concern about Dr. Seuss, but not about Daunte Wright.

If your response to the death of a 20 year-old Black man, who was pulled over by police for an air freshener violation, is “he should have complied,” you don’t understand the fear that Daunte was likely feeling in his encounter with police 10 miles from the Derek Chauvin trial.

Need more proof that America’s got a serious policing problem? Let’s talk about Daunte Wright’s death and Caron Nazario’s violent traffic stop at the hands of police.

Our hearts are heavy over yet another shooting of a Black man, Daunte Wright, at the hands of police. It’s important to conduct a full and transparent investigation, but this is also a reminder of just how badly we need to reimagine policing and public safety in this country.
