Gabriel García Márquez, Jorge Amado, and Pablo Neruda were among the illustrious leftist intellectuals from around the world visiting Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. @nasredinhoja

31 years ago today, in 1989, just eight days after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a student protest against communist rule was violently put down in Prague. And this was the beginning of the end for Communist Czechoslovakia. The Velvet Revolution, in photos:

The 1989 revolutions were particularly crazy if you were a journalist: "I remember working in Vienna, and we were still coping with Czechoslovakia, and then someone announced, [they] came in and said "Bulgaria's gone."

ICYMI (from our archives): Over a third of young Czechs are unable to make a link between the date of August 21, 1968 and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.

How a letter from the BBC to Czechoslovakia saved a family from liquidation by the Nazis

British PM Neville Chamberlain in 1938 called the conflict between Nazi Germany and my native Czechoslovakia a "quarrel in a far away country, between people of whom we know nothing.” Less than two years later, the Nazis were bombing London.

@DonaldJTrumpJr : "Our mother escaped czechoslovakia'>Communist Czechoslovakia. Our grandfather and our grandparents took us there at a young age so we could see what it was actually like, so we could understand the blessings and the good fortunes that we had being Americans."

I can tell you all this for sure- whatever ridiculous propaganda we were fed in then Czechoslovakia, which was mandated by Soviet Union- pales next to the lies being told and repeated by trump and his ilk. I am not kidding… trump truly trumps the communists. And that’s not easy

50 years ago, the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia to put an end to the Prague Spring. The Soviets succeeded in the short term, but in the long run they failed because the democratic spirit cannot truly be defeated. May this anniversary always remind us of that timeless lesson

My family and I arrived in America 70 years ago next week, after fleeing the Nazis and then the Communists who had taken over Czechoslovakia. Please do not take for granted the privilege of living in the world’s oldest and greatest democracy. Go and vote!

After fleeing the communists in Czechoslovakia, my family & I arrived in America on November 11, 1948. We were welcomed & provided the chance to build new lives in freedom. For this opportunity and all that has since come with it, I will always be grateful. #RefugeesWelcome

70 years ago today a communist coup destroyed democracy in my native Czechoslovakia. The coup forced my family into exile, and months later we were welcomed as refugees in the USA. Ever since I’ve been a grateful American, and I’ve learned to never take democracy for granted.

4⃣0⃣0⃣ goals in a European top flight. Only three people have ever done that before and a LONG time ago... Josef Bican (Czechoslovakia 1931–55): 500 Jimmy McGrory (Scotland 1922–38): 410 Stjepan Bobek (Yugoslavia 1945–58): 403

Quote of the day so far from David Davis, former Europe minister: "Czechoslovakia doesn’t currently have a government"
