I think a lot of up-and-coming writers get incredibly shitty advice on what's Good vs Bad Writing. Not sure why, but there are times when I'm really glad I'm self-taught, if only so I didn't have to hear "SFF isn't real lit-ra-cher!" or "What's with all these women?" or whatever.
