400,000 people in DR Congo need emergency help after fleeing a volcano, says the UN. People in Goma were ordered to evacuate after a volcano killed 30+ people and officials warned of more eruptions. Some families slept on the road, some saying they have not eaten since fleeing.
Up to 5,000 people in DR Congo are homeless after a volcano erupted, killing at least 32 people and destroying up to 2,500 homes. Over 100 children were reported missing. Aftershocks have caused huge cracks in the city of Goma, with worries of more lava flows.
A volcano erupted near Goma in DR Congo, killing at least 20 people and covering hundreds of homes with lava. Up to 170 children are missing. One woman lost her sick husband, who she was unable to help escape: "I ran away and he got burned inside. I don't know what to do."
DR Congo ordered mass evacuations in Goma over fears of a new volcanic eruption, after Mt. Nyiragongo erupted on Saturday, killing over 30. Officials warn the worst case scenario is an eruption below Lake Kivu, which could release clouds of CO2 and cause asphyxiations.
