The rift, which formed earlier this year, ‘pushed northeast at up to 1 km per day’ until it eventually broke off into an iceberg. Director of BAS Professor Dame Jane Francis said, ‘our teams at BAS have been prepared for the calving of an iceberg from Brunt Ice Shelf for years.
