Earlier today I tweeted a piece by Bob Lighthizer in Foreign Affairs magazine. Same issue has a piece on 'strategic corruption' - how autocracies (China, Russia, Turkey) are becoming adept at spreading money around in democratic countries to create allies

Trade Secrets today: the WTO has more power than it looks & probably just blocked a big English football club takeover. ALSO: the homeopathically weak effects of UK trade deals with Oz & NZ. ALSO: Bob Lighthizer's IT'S NOT FAIR tariff claims dissected.

The U.S.-China trade deal is going great and shows no signs of weakening, says U.S. bob lighthizer'>Trade Representative Bob Lighthizer. “Every indication is that in spite of this Covid-19, they are going to do what they say…We have an excellent agreement.” @JoshZumbrun

Well, now we know how Bob Lighthizer feels about the OECD proposal on a digital services tax: “They all got together and agreed they were going to screw America.” Says it won't fly.

Bob Lighthizer on how uncertainty explains both offshoring, and its reversal: Uncertainty over "China’s MFN status...raised the risk-adjusted costs of investing there. After 2001, that uncertainty went away — along with at least 2M jobs"

Bob Lighthizer’s “Mission Accomplished” moment? “The era of reflexive offshoring is over, and with it the old overzealous emphasis on efficiency and the concomitant lack of concern for the jobs that were lost.”

I’m a skeptic we will ever see Chinese purchases reach anywhere near what the deal envisions. But dismissing the deal on the basis of a single quarter’s trade seems premature. It also ignores the dynamic that Bob Lighthizer has sought to create.

… Steve Mnuchin is a former Hollywood financier who, as Treasury Secretary, resisted shutting down the economy in the middle of a global pandemic; Bob Lighthizer is at least an actual expert, but trade negotiations don’t have much to do with a global health issue.

@willmauldin  @learyreportsS  @KennedyCSISpokesman  for U.S. trade representative Bob Lighthizer: “We expect that the Chinese will meet their commitments under the agreement. "

We had @economics ⁩’ @lucy_meakin ⁩ at the Oxford Union tonight for Bob Lighthizer’s speech there. Here is her write up:
