France returned 26 artifacts to Benin, 130 years after they were stolen by French soldiers during colonial rule. 90% of Africa's cultural heritage was looted from the continent during colonization. France still holds over 90,000 such artifacts, most in a single Paris museum.

France agreed to return 26 historic artworks stolen from Benin during colonization. They were taken by French soldiers 130 years ago and put in French museums. About 90% of Africa's cultural heritage is in museums outside Africa, including at least 90,000 artifacts in France.

UK universities returned 2 of 3,000+ sculptures stolen from Nigeria by British troops in 1897 — the first UK institutions to do so. 900 of the Benin Bronzes are in the British Museum. Experts say about 90% of Africa's antiquities are in Europe due to colonization and looting.

France began the formal transfer of 26 artifacts to Benin, where colonial troops ransacked a royal palace more than a century ago. It’s the first large-scale act of restitution to Africa by a former European colonial power.

A university in Scotland will soon return a Benin bronze stolen by British soldiers in 1897, admitting it was taken from Nigeria in an “extremely immoral” fashion. University of Aberdeen’s decision raises pressure on other establishments like the British Museum to do the same.
