Following PM @BorisJohnson ’s decision to pause the process of ratification of the Withdrawal Agreement, and in order to avoid a no-deal #Brexit , I will recommend the EU27 accept the UK request for an extension. For this I will propose a written procedure.
THIS IS JUST THE WITHDRAWAL AGREEMENT.
It will take YEARS AND YEARS to negotiate the actual Future Relationship with the EU.
That's YEARS of neglecting to discuss schools, hospitals, social care.
YEARS of endlessly discussing Brexit.
YEARS of waste.
YEARS of anger.
Imagine if every MP had a deep understanding of what EU membership actually means & then read the full (500+ page?) legal text of any new withdrawal agreement & then voted for or against it according to what they considered to be in the national interest...
That would be nice.
EU27 responds to UK requests in a positive spirit and:
👉 agrees to Art. 50 extension until 22 May if Withdrawal Agreement approved next week
👉 if not agreed next week then extension until 12 April
👉 approves ‘Strasbourg Agreement’
👉 continues no-deal preparations
Britain should act to ease tensions in the Gulf, not fuel a military escalation that began with US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear agreement. Without credible evidence about the tanker attacks, the government’s rhetoric will only increase the threat of war.
My message to PM : The EU position is clear and consistent. The Withdrawal Agreement is not open for renegotiation. Yesterday, we found out what the UK doesn't want. But we still don’t know what the UK does want. #brexit
Listening to debate in : there seems to be a dangerous illusion that the UK can benefit from a transition in the absence of the WA.
Let me be clear: the only legal basis for a transition is the WA. No withdrawal agreement means no transition.
