#OTD in 1997, the Cassini mission to Saturn began. Throughout its travels, it captured never-before-seen imagery of & revealed new details about the ringed planet & its moons. One such discovery? One of its moons, Titan, has an Earthlike atmosphere & surface. [🎨: @NASAJPL ]
A journey of 3.5 billion miles begins with one step… #OTD in 1997, our Cassini mission set out for Saturn. Nearly seven years later, after traveling through the inner solar system several times, the spacecraft finally arrived at the Ringed Planet.
1969: Race for the Moon 2019: Race for the most moons With 20 new moons recently discovered, Saturn's count has risen to 82, allowing the ringed planet to surpass Jupiter as the planet in our solar system with the most moons. More from @carnegiescience :
A team led by @carnegiescience 's Scott S. Sheppard has found 20 new moons orbiting #Saturn . This brings the ringed planet’s total number of moons to 82, surpassing #Jupiter , which has 79. You can help name them! Contest info:
Also, rumor has it a "ringed planet" emoji is on its way, so everything's coming up Saturn. 🪐
Saturn is now being recognized as the 'moon king' of our solar system, with astronomers spotting 20 more of them orbiting the giant ringed planet, bringing its total count to 82 - three more than Jupiter.
#Saturn is so beautiful that astronomers cannot resist using Hubble to take yearly snapshots of the ringed world when it is at its closest distance to Earth. 📸 Find out what we saw this year on the ringed planet:
Managed by @NASAAmes , Pioneer 11 was the first spacecraft to explore Saturn. On Sep. 1, 1979, Pioneer 11 passed within 13,000 miles of the ringed planet. It returned 440 images and data about the planet and its rings and satellites.
#HubbleClassic Captured on February 24, 2009, this movie shows four moons of Saturn (Titan, Mimas, Dione & Enceladus) passing in front of the ringed planet. These rare "transits" only happen when Saturn's rings are tilted nearly "edge on" to Earth:
Awesome and majestic: a NASA/ESA image of the on , a comp #aurorasite #Saturn of optical images of the ringed planet taken in 2018 and ultraviolet observations of the northern aurora taken over seven months in 2017. Details:
Before making the giant ringed planet its permanent home on Sept. 15, 2017, captured this beautiful view of Saturn and its three moons; Mimas (behind the rings), Janus (above the rings) and Tethys (below the rings):
This spin on the Nutcracker Suite features the moons of Saturn! Sit back and watch as they majestically dance around the ringed planet: The movie clips are a compilation of ~61 pics taken by , which ended its mission Sept. 15.
An epic journey to Saturn. These 2 images illustrate just how far traveled to the ringed planet: Left: taken in 2001, ~317 million miles from Saturn. Right: taken 2 days before the mission’s fateful end, ~360,000 miles from Saturn.
Swirling clouds, driven by fast winds on Saturn, are seen around the north pole of the ringed planet:
