Faced with an aging group of docents, Philadelphia's Penn Museum hit on an idea: Hire immigrants and refugees hailing from the same regions as its artifacts. About a third of visitors now specifically come to take a tour with a Global Guide.

The Penn Museum has launched a program that works with Philadelphia organizations to hire refugees as docents. They tell visitors about artifacts from their own part of the world — and put them in cultural context from personal experience.
