Residents and civil society activists in Jalalabad city, the capital of Nangarhar province, hold a vigil tonight to honor Dr. Tatsu Nakamura, a Japanese aid worker slain today in the province.

Nakamura died of his wounds shortly after gunmen fired a volley of bullets on his car on Wednesday morning on a road in Nangarhar. Provincial governor’s spokesman, Attaullah Khogyani, said Nakamura was heading to the provincial capital, Jalalabad when the attack took place.

Five Afghans were killed and a Japanese aid worker wounded Wednesday in an attack in Jalalabad city in the eastern province of Nangarhar, officials said.

US envoy Khalilzad in a tweet said the recent campaign in Nangarhar is “an example" of "major progress" against ISIS-K (Daesh) and that operations by US/coalition, Afghan forces and Taliban against (Daesh) have caused the group to lose “territory and fighters.”
