Emanating from the center of our Milky Way Galaxy are two bubbles made solely of powerful gamma rays.

"The amount of mechanical energy that these outflows carry is up to several hundreds of times higher than the luminosity of the entire Milky Way galaxy," @VTPhysics  researcher Nahum Arav says in @PopMech  🌌 🔭 ⚡️

Astronomers used to believe that the Andromeda galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbor, was three times as massive as the Milky Way. Not anymore.

Well beyond our Milky Way, the massive cluster of galaxies Abell 370 – five billion light-years away – warps spacetime with its gravity and distorts the light from even more distant galaxies, turning them into arcs in this Hubble Space Telescope image:

Farther away, let's dive through the interstellar gas and dust that pervade our home Galaxy, the Milky Way, with a scenery of wispy filaments and bubbling nebulas where new stars are being born, as viewed in infrared light by the Herschel satellite:

How galaxies, including our Milky Way, were born out of the early cosmos is just beginning to come into focus.

By observing in infrared wavelengths, the GLIMPSE survey revealed the Milky Way’s spiral structure.
