WATCH: It's official! Brazilian surfer Koxa set the world record at the World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Awards at the weekend for the 24.38m wave he rode in Nazaré, Portugal on Nov. 8, 2017. The previous record was set by Garrett McNamara back in 2011, with a wave of 23.77m.

When Garrett McNamara, a legendary big-wave surfer, first saw the giant walls of water in 2010, “it was like finding the Holy Grail,” he said. “I’d found the elusive wave.”

“For the average person, could easily be hell.” Big wave surfer Garrett McNamara admits his life’s work isn’t for everyone.

“I thought he was crazy,” said Celeste Botelho, a restaurant owner who gave subsidized meals to Garrett McNamara as he pursued the world record for surfing the largest wave. She avoided growing too attached to Mr. McNamara, fearing he might soon drown.

“I’ve stopped going to the doctor. I just use Crazy Glue now.” Garrett McNamara prefers his own medicine for cuts and scrapes because he can be “back in the water that day.”
