This afternoon we dedicated the @OversightDems Hearing Room to my dear friend and former colleague Elijah E. Cummings. Elijah knew the critical role government oversight plays in a functioning democracy and never shied away from this awesome responsibility as Chairman.

I had the great honor of being Elijah Cummings’ friend and colleague, and I was proud to speak at a dedication ceremony today to rename the House Oversight & Reform Committee Hearing Room as the Elijah E. Cummings Room.
Today, Members of Congress gathered together for the dedication ceremony of the Committee on Oversight and Reform Hearing Room being named in the Honor of Chairman Elijah E. Cummings.
Elijah Cummings was a shining light for our country – someone who relentlessly pursued truth and fought injustice. I was proud to honor him today as we dedicated a room to his name, the first room in the Capitol complex to be named after an African American Member of Congress.
We heard that Donald Trump only cares about the big stuff that helps him personally. The question now is — what do we care about? The Constitution? Our oath of office? Or merely our party. In the words of Elijah Cummings: We are better than that.
