I had the great honor to meet Indianapolis survivor Edgar Harrell at Liberty University back in February. He shares parts of his story here. God bless you Edgar, and all who served aboard the USS Indianapolis.

Waiting to get promoted can sometimes feel like forever. This Marine waited 73 years. Today, Edgar Harrell, a survivor from the sinking of the USS Indianapolis was promoted to sergeant. Semper Fi, Sgt Harrell.

Edgar Harrell can still hear it: “I spent four days in the water listening to the screams of 600 men being ripped apart by sharks.”

This year’s honored guest was Sergeant Edgar Harrell of the United States Marine Corps. He is one of the last living survivors of the U.S.S. Indianapolis.

Cpl. Edgar Harrell floated in the shark-infested Pacific Ocean for four-and-a-half days.

Over the last week, 92-year-old Edgar Harrell has become a sort of celebrity after the ship’s wreckage was located.

Just 13 men alive have any true memory of what took place aboard the USS Indianapolis. Edgar Harrell is one of them.
