Happy birthday to Konstantin Novoselov! On Fridays, Novoselov and Andre Geim used to explore things they had no time for as part of their research projects. One Friday they started experimenting with graphite and tape and a new material was born - graphene.

I agree absolutely with my colleagues Andre Geim and Martin Rees. Beyond the immense practical difficulties, Brexit is seen as a Trumpian, nativist project by those who Johnson pretends to value. Scientists will be seeking visas to leave, not to come here.

In 2004 Konstantin Novoselov and Andre Geim used sticky tape to create a form of carbon one atom thick. Thin yet strong and able to conduct heat and electricity, the new material, graphene, kicked off a new era of materials science. Happy birthday to Novoselov who turns 44 today!
